Seneschal: Baron Simon Maurus "The Argent Quill"

Message from the Seneschal:

The British scholar H.S. Bennett described the seneschal's role by saying that

"the seneschal must know the size and needs of every manor; how many acres should be ploughed and how much seed will be needed. He must know all his bailiffs and reeves, how they conduct the lord's business and how they treat the peasants. He must know exactly how many penny loaves can be made from a quarter of corn, or how many cattle each pasture should support. He must for ever be on the alert lest any of the lord's franchises lapse or are usurped by others. He must think of the lord's needs, both of money and of kind, and see that they are constantly supplied. In short, he must be all-knowing and he is all-powerful".

In the SCA the Seneschal is the administrative officer and the legal representative for the Barony. A Seneschal’s duties include but are not limited to: the filing of reports, liaison with the Baron and Baroness and the other officers to ensure smooth operations of the Barony, chairing meetings, liaison with their Kingdom superior and outside agencies. As a legal representative of the SCA with the abilities to sign contracts, the Seneschal must be a paid member of the SCA. From the Bylaws of Oldenfeld:

The Seneschal is the administrative and executive officer of Oldenfeld and is the legal representative recognized by the SCA, with duties and responsibilities itemized by the SCA and Trimaris. The Seneschal shall, in consultation with the Coronet, organize and publish the annual schedule of Oldenfeld events, business meetings, officers meetings, curia, and any other special meetings as may be appropriate. The Seneschal or a designate shall preside over all Oldenfeld business meetings, elections, officers meetings, and administrative processes to conduct the business of Oldenfeld. The Seneschal is a designated signatory on the Oldenfeld bank accounts and is accountable for the preservation and proper discharge of Oldenfeld inventory and assets.
